Cicadas, also known locally as Jhengar or Binda جھینگر یا بینڈا, create a unique sound that fills the air during summer. While many people find this noise annoying, some, like me, find it soothing and even sleep peacefully to it.
Only male cicadas make these sounds to attract female cicadas, who remain completely silent. The males produce their calls by vibrating special organs called tymbals, and they can keep this up for hours. Their calls also serve to warn off enemies.
Despite the loud noise, cicadas are harmless to humans. However, their persistent singing can make some people feel restless.
Cicadas play an important role in nature. They provide food for many predators, and their underground nymphs help aerate the soil. Their fascinating life cycle, especially those that emerge every 13 or 17 years, adds to the wonder of these summer musicians.
